If your dad told you to change your oil every 3,000 miles, he was giving you great advice, for the 1970s. Modern engines and modern oils have changed dramatically. Following the old 3,000-mile rule today is usually just wasting money.
Here’s what actually determines how often you need an oil change in 2025:
It Depends on Your Oil Type
Conventional Oil: 5,000–7,500 Miles
Conventional (petroleum-based) oil is still used in some older vehicles. If your car specifies conventional oil, an interval of 5,000–7,500 miles is typical for normal driving conditions. The old 3,000-mile rule applied to this type of oil, but even that was conservative.
Full Synthetic Oil: 7,500–10,000+ Miles
Most vehicles made in the last 10–15 years require full synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is more resistant to breakdown, performs better at temperature extremes, and lasts significantly longer. Many manufacturers specify 7,500–10,000 miles between changes, and some premium synthetic oils (like Mobil 1 Extended Performance) are rated for up to 15,000 miles.
Synthetic Blend: 5,000–7,500 Miles
Synthetic blend oils sit between conventional and full synthetic, better than conventional but not as long-lasting as full synthetic.
It Also Depends on Your Driving Conditions
Your owner’s manual likely has two service intervals: normal and severe. Most people assume their driving is “normal,” but severe conditions are more common than you think:
- Lots of short trips (under 10 miles)
- Stop-and-go traffic commuting
- Extreme hot or cold temperatures (yes, Massachusetts winters count)
- Towing or carrying heavy loads
- Dusty or dirty driving environments
If your driving fits the severe category, you should use the shorter interval recommended in your owner’s manual.
The Best Answer: Check Your Owner’s Manual
Your owner’s manual has the manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval for your specific engine. That’s the most reliable guide. Many newer vehicles also have an oil life monitoring system that tracks actual engine conditions and tells you when to change the oil, even more accurate than any fixed interval.
